Kim uses a combination of different hedgerow materials, including willow, ash, hazel, oak, dogwood, elm, maple and whatever else may be growing around her as well as using farmed willow from Somerset. This creates a great contrast of colours and textures.
Non-growing sculptures can be treated with a linseed oil preparation or a chemical wood preserver and may be moved to a sheltered location during bad weather to improve their life expectancy.

Living willow sculptures can be either made in situ or delivered and planted, depending on their size.
As a general rule of thumb, where grass grows green and lush so will willow.
For the first few years, while the plant is becoming established, it is important to ensure a good watering during the summer months.
New growth can be woven back into the frame, creating a living willow shell.
After two or three years the sculpture may be trimmed during the summer months to maintain the shape.

"This is an idea I've been experimenting with for a few years and shown here is my first completed UV piece. By the light of day he appears to be a 'normal' willow sculpture but when bathed in UV light he glows with beads of colour, representing the energy flow around his body. This sculpture has mainly red colouring, radiating from his base chakra, linked to the basic instincts of survival on earth, sexual energy and the basic instinct to procreate the human race.
I am currently working on a corresponding female piece who has a completely different energy and will add pictures in the near future. "
